Me And The Media

Growing up with technology:

My relationship with the media consists of me using social media regularly, watching movies and also listening to music daily. My opinions on different types of medias and how they are portrayed today vary. I use some forms much more than others.

Social Media:

I only focus on one social media platform, which is Facebook. I found it very time consuming to try and juggle more than one; so as well as Facebook, I would also update my feeds with similar posts on Instagram, snapchat and Twitter. I found Facebook to be the most beneficial due to the fact it has the largest audience. I use Facebook to advertise my art and photography through its 'Pages' app. This free feature allows me to create a 'business' blog, without having to pay for a domain like I would through Google. It's called 'The Perky Pet Shed", I use this as a separate profile to my personal Facebook account to post about my art, photography and pets; from this I receive an income.

Newspapers:

I currently do not read newspapers because I find it difficult to pick out one that may be the most 'accurate' or 'resourceful'. Newspapers like The Sun are filled with sports information- I have no interest in sports what so ever, so this is no use to me. I am also not interested in seeing celebrities enjoying a break away in Majorca with their natural bodies in a bikini. I am not interested in politics, and I do not like the idea of reading a newspaper which is trying to persuade me to vote for a specific party. I believe that by reading a newspaper often, you are prone to 'fake news'. The only time I associate with the 'News' is when I listen to Smooth radio, from this I can catch a briefing about the most important events which have recently happened in the world. By listening to the news on the radio, I can easily choose to participate in another activity if a topic crops up that I am not interested in- and its free to do so, so no money is wasted. The only link I used to have with newspapers is when my mother used to buy The Sun regularly, and I would wait until she was finished with it and complete puzzles at the back of the paper.

Music video:

My relationship with modern day music is pretty non-existent. I haven't listened to the chart in almost a lifetime. When I just so happen to be in an environment where MTV or a similar music show is playing on the television I find myself glad that I don't catch it regularly. The chart mostly consists of the Pop or Hip Hop genre of music, and the music videos that typically go along with the song are more than often filled with explicit content. I personally do not care about the musicians' sex-life or economic position, and I've found that these are common examples of themes within most 21st century songs. I much prefer listening to music dated between 1940's and 1960's and enjoying a music video which involves the artist or artists performing their song as a way to promote themselves- which I believe should be the soul purpose of a music video.

Here is a video of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons performing some of their biggest hits LIVE in the mid 60's:

  1. You have gone into your relationship with the media in fine details and provided your opinion with every example you have given, you have also embedded a youtube video, provided links and pictures within your post. An area I believe you could improve is by possibly delving further into other forms of media such as TV , and things like the movie industry and what interests you about that specifically.

    1. Thank you. I will add more forms of 'The media' in this post and my opinions about them at a later date.

  2. Interesting stuff Sophia - I think that you have a healthy scepticism of newspapers but, nonetheless, urge you to consider reading a national newspaper every once in a while. Do this as a media student rather than necessarily as a means to find out what is happening in the world - think about political agendas that may be displayed (editorial comments usually give you a clear sense of a newspapers political allegiances) and also consider how codes are used. For example, newspapers will usually have a main image on their from page - why have they used that particular image? What can you say about the angle used or the composition of it? Has it been cropped to leave certain key information out?

We will be looking closely at copies of The Daily Mail and The Guardian during the course. Another interesting thing to do is to see how different newspapers such as these report on the same story.
